Last week we decided to revisit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area in Fredericksburg, Texas. Kristian, the boys, and I camped here for a weekend last year with our Classical Conversations group and had a great time! Since my parents are in town, we decided to enrich their lives with a day trip to Fredericksburg and “The Rock.” Bwah ha ha.
First stop: Historic Fredericksburg for window shopping and lunch!

Main Street is lined with shop after fun, little shop featuring clothing, furniture, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and more! You could spend a whole day just looking in each of the shops and stopping for a bite to eat!rock lunch
Refreshed and ready hike to hike to the summit of Enchanted Rock!
Legend states Tonkawa Indians named this popular 425-foot pink granite batholith, believing a Spanish conquistador cast a spell on it, making magical ghost fires glow at the top.

The Rock is a huge, pink granite exfoliation dome, that rises 425 feet above ground, 1,825 feet above sea level, and covers 640 acres. It is one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.

Climbing to the summit is no easy feat! Mom and Dad were troopers!
On the other side of the rock, there’s a small cave for exploring, which is what boys do best (but I followed them through with the camera, of course.)

After a little exploring on the side of the rock, we headed down.

There’s a rule that states that after you’ve hiked a big rock, you must eat ice cream and try on funny hats… or something like that.
